The Saskatoon Haunted Hike
The Saskatoon Haunted Hike in downtown Saskatoon is a very well sourced event filled with laughter as a humorous take on spirits in Saskatoon since the town began in the 1880's.
Where did I get my information from? Some stories are so old and handed down from one generation to the next that nobody knows. However, the factual basis for some of it can be found on plaques along the tour route and other information that has become available over many decades since the humble beginnings of Saskatoon in the 19th century.
These sources include Saving Our City-Saskatoon’s Protected Heritage Structures, Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan-three volume series, Exploring the Wonder City, You are not Alone-Investigating Paranormal Activity at the Western Development Musuem, Saskatoon Stone, articles in the Saskatoon History Review, You Tube videos and personal interviews have been used to paint quite a diverse picture of ghostly life in Bridge City.
Some of the questions explored include:
Who was Jimmy Flanagan, the first owner of the Senator Hotel and what was his colourful reputation around Saskatoon?
What was the great pick-up spot in town before women were allowed in bars?
Who are the 13 playful spirits in the Parktown Hotel? What ghostly face can be seen in the window of the ghost room in Senator and just exactly who are the Bessborough ghosts?
What apartment building has the ghost with the most mischievous tricks while couples are in bed?
What happened one night when a drunk woke up in the middle of the Christmas Mass to tell a joke and what frightening figure did an elderly woman see in HMSC Unicorn building while actually doing the tour?
What ghosts prowl the campus of the University of Saskatchewan and SIAST?
What happens in the midtown Parking lot at 3 am along with the Woodlawn and Nutana Cemeteries?
What is the story of the St. Louis ghost train and did someone really die on the tracks?
And they are not all old ghost stories either that date back decades. New ones are being added like the hauntings that are said to be currently occurring in one former funeral home now an office in downtown Saskatoon and other crazy stories about ghosts actually doing house work when the owners are doing their jobs and away from the house.
The tour starts at the Senator Hotel continues down 21st Street towards the Bessborough Hotel then continues across Spadina Crescent up Third Avenue and finishes at the former Third Avenue United Church. It takes about 90 minutes or longer depending on how many people are participating and how many questions they can come up with.
